He studied in University College Dublin and began writing short stories in his teens. He is best
known for his “Monument” novels, which depict the lives and loves of Irish people from the
late 19th century to the present day. The novels have been widely acclaimed, in Ireland, the
UK and US, and his works have been translated into several languages. His main success,
Capital Sins, released in 2010, is a satirical novel which examines the collapse of the so-called
Celtic Tiger, Ireland’s economic and cultural boom at the turn of the 21st century.
