En un estado familiarista, como es el caso del Estado español, donde las obligaciones del bienestar de la familia pasan en gran medida por la unidad familiar, ésta necesita de recursos adicionales para que puedan plantearse la posibilidad de tener hijos sin tener que recurrir al limitado y explotado recurso de las abuelas. La debilidad de políticas sociales, en el Estado español y otros países europeos, orientadas a reducir las cargas relativas al cuidado de la familia van en detrimento no solamente de los derechos de igualdad de la mujer (madres y abuelas) sino también de las condiciones que favorezcan la formación de familias capaces de conciliar el trabajo y la atención adecuada de sus hijos e hijas. Los abuelos y abuelas han tenido siempre un papel muy importante en la transmisión de valores y en la muestra de afecto hacia sus nietos y nietas, pero sobretodo en las últimas décadas este papel ha cambiado asumiendo el cuidado, crianza y educación. Las abuelas se han convertido en un elemento provisor del bienestar familiar en un contexto de crisis económica y  social,  imprescindible para la conciliación de la vida laboral y familiar. Y  aunque el cuidado de los nietos y nietas les proporciona experiencias positivas, actualmente también les supone una dedicación diaria hacia ellos que en ocasiones les genera problemas físicos y emocionales.

In a family-based State, such as the Spanish, the wellness of the family unit depends on its extension. This unity needs additional resources in order to consider the possibility of having children without having to rely on the limited and over-exploited resource of grandmothers. The social policies in the Spanish State, as well as other European countries, try to reduce the workload related to family care. These efforts are directed not only towards the detriment of women's rights (mothers and grandmothers) but also towards the conditions which encourage the formation of families able to combine work obligations with due attention to their children. Grandparents have always had an important role in the family, transmitting values and showing affection to their grandchildren.  However, this role has changed over the past few decades to the point where grandmothers practically care for, bring up, and educate their grandchildren. Grandmothers have become the great providers of family welfare in an economic and social context, characterized by the struggle to combine paid work with bringing up children. Even though the care of their grandchildren will bring them positive experiences, it also means they are tied to this task on a daily basis and, occasionally, suffer both physical as well as emotional problems.
