Existe un discurso  de los medios hacia la población general,  para justificar el ataque al Estado de Bienestar, y los recortes en recursos sociales de todo tipo inclusive recursos humanos: "Los Gobiernos se endeudaron demasiado, entre otras causas por el incremento del gasto social que ha llegado a ser insostenible y ahora están pagando el precio; hoy la única respuesta es la austeridad fiscal, reducir el déficit y desechar o recortar el Estado de Bienestar Social". Desde el Trabajo Social hay que darle a este discurso toda la importancia que tiene, ya que si desde esta disciplina se da por válido sin más, el Trabajo Social, se convierte en un simple instrumento al servicio de las Políticas Sociales que priman en el momento. Las Políticas Sociales en sentido amplio están conformadas por la Política Económica, Educativa, Sanitaria, y Social en sentido restringido (base para el Sistema Público de servicios sociales); es decir, todos los ámbitos que configuran el Estado de Bienestar. Por ello, especialmente en el momento actual, se requiere el refuerzo de un ámbito del Trabajo Social, el de Asesoramiento en las Políticas Sociales. Su gran repercusión se fundamenta en que: a) es un campo muy amplio que puede implementarse a nivel Estatal, Autonómico y Local; b) el tipo de Políticas Sociales aprobadas en un país, comunidad autónoma y ayuntamiento, influirán en la amplitud o restricción de la mayor parte de ámbitos restantes del Trabajo Social.

There is a common discourse in the media addressed to the general public, to justify their attack against the Welfare State, the cuts in social resources of every kind, including human resources: "Governments got themselves too deeply in debt, due to, amongst other reasons, the increase of social costs which have become unsustainable. And now, they are paying the price; today, the only answer is Fiscal Austerity, a reduction of the deficit and to scrap or reduce the Social Welfare State". From Social Work, this issue must be considered with its entire importance.  Because if it were accepted as valid without argument, the Social Work would become just an instrument at the service of the ruling Social Policies at any gave time. Social Policies, in the widest sense, are shaped by Economic, Education, Health and Social Policies in the narrowest sense (the basis for the Public System of social services), that is to say, every aspect of the Welfare State. This fact requires, especially at the present moment, a strengthening of the Social Work and Social Policies Advisory. Their major impact is based on: A) it is a wide field which can be implemented at any national, regional and local level. B) the type of Social Policies approved nationally, regionally and locally, would determine the extent or restriction of the rest of fields of the Social Work.
