The cork oak is a tree with unique abilities. Man has shaped cork oak forests into complex systems that have been able to maintain their economic, social and environmental sustainability. Over the last century, the cork oak management system has been economical supported mainly by the production of cork.

 

Product diversification has shown to be an advantage for forest systems and environmental benefits are nowadays a key issue in management. The use of new management tools, the integration of the forest-to-product chain, and the adoption of the state-of-the-art technologies are the new challenges faced by the cork oak forests and industry.
