The project Music perception and reading skills in foreign language learning (supported by Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, FFI2010-15738)  investigates the influence of musical instruction on rhythm, tone and phoneme discrimination, recognition of melody and chord duration on improved development of reading skills in English as a foreign language among 8-9 year old Spanish children. To read a text means to provide a sound system for a written message. Both in reading aloud and silent reading the graphemes which the eye deciphers are supported by the sound elements: phonemes or sounds, accent, rhythm, and intonation.  Working with these elements in foreign language acquisition constitutes a first step of great relevance in order to develop reading comprehension.

The main results expected from the project are:

  1. A report on how training in sound-music elements facilitates the process of reading in a foreign language
  2. The creation of a musical innovation program of optimizing the reading skill by stimulating phonemic awareness.
