Microalgae are having their moment. The 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine recognizes research carried out using the small unicellular microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, which laid the foundations for optogenetics.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, announced yesterday, has been awarded to Peter Hegemann, Karl Deisseroth, and Georg Nagel for their pioneering work leading to the development of optogenetics, based on the breaking research of  Hegemann with the small green microalga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

The Genetic Improvement Unit of Photosynthetic Organisms (https://www.uhu.es/rensma/presentacion-mgm/) is privileged to have Peter Hegemann among their collaborators.

Peter is a collaborative and generous scientist, and we have had the opportunity to carry out some very interesting work together on gene editing in microalgae (https://doi.org/10.1111/ppl.70811). It is a great source of pride and a privilege to have the opportunity to work with him.
